Congratulations New York State – But wait…is there more to school improvement than test scores?

August 25, 2010

Congratulations to New York State for being among 10 winners in the second phase of the Race for the Top competition for education funding. New York will receive nearly $700 million as part of the federal education reform program.

Here’s my question. Is any school district in New York State interested in assessing progress in terms of such criteria as attendance, discipline referrals, enthusiasm for learning, drop-out rate, school vandalism, community involvement, or students assuming leadership roles in school and the community?

I  think it would be great to reward improvement in these areas because in the long run improvement in these areas would be as large or perhaps larger benefit to society than academic improvement.
